Coachella Bag Policy: What Size Bag and Hydration Pack Are Allowed

Coachella is one of the more relaxed major festivals on bags — which surprises people who've been to EDC or Lollapalooza, where hydration packs get measured by how many pockets they have. At Coachella the rule is about size, and the allowance is generous.

Here's what the official policy actually says, what it means for a hydration pack, and how to get through the gate without losing anything.

The rule: 18" x 13" x 8.5" or smaller

Per Coachella's official FAQ, bags, backpacks, purses and handbags must be 18" x 13" x 8.5" or smaller.

The detail worth knowing: that's measured fully packed, and it's enforced with a physical box — the same idea as an airline carry-on sizer. If your bag doesn't fit in the box, you don't get in with it. So a soft bag you've overstuffed can fail even if it measures fine empty.

Notably, there is no clear-bag requirement and no limit on the number of pockets or compartments. That's a real difference from the EDM-festival circuit, and it means a normal multi-pocket hydration pack is fine here.

Hydration packs: allowed, but the bladder must be empty

Coachella permits an empty, refillable hydration pack or water bottle, provided it isn't metal, aluminium, steel or glass. Plastic bladders — which is what essentially every hydration pack uses — are fine.

Once you're inside there are free, twice-filtered water refill stations, plus bottled water for sale in the venue and camping.

"Empty" means empty. Not "mostly empty," not "just a bit at the bottom." Drain it before you queue. The easiest version of this is a bladder that pulls out of the pack, so you can empty and re-seat it in seconds rather than wrestling with it in the security line.

What to expect at the gate

Coachella's published festival info is straightforward about screening: all patrons are subject to search, and you'll pass dog sweeps, bag checks and walk-through metal detectors.

The part that costs people money: "Prohibited items will be refused upon entry and must be returned to the patron's vehicle or disposed of by the patron." There's no bag check, no holding area. If it isn't allowed, it goes back to your car or in a bin. If you parked in general parking, that walk is long enough to cost you a set.

Three things that make the gate faster:

• Arrive before the crush. The venue opens around 1pm Friday through Sunday. Gates back up as the first big names approach.
• Pack light and pack once. A bag that's obviously under the limit doesn't get boxed.
• Empty the bladder before you're in line, not when you're asked.

Both sit inside the limit with room to spare, and since Coachella doesn't cap pocket count, the zip pockets and anti-theft compartment aren't an issue here the way they are at some other festivals. Worth being straight about one thing: the desert gets hot and the walk between stages is long. A 1.5L or 2L carry is a meaningful buffer between refill stations, not a full day's water. Use the free stations — they're there and they're filtered.

Coachella 2027 runs April 9–11 and April 16–18, 2027, with both weekends featuring the same lineup, art and food.
